amman-damascus express railway service to be launched next month jordan times tuesday, june 15, 1999   amman-damascus express railway service to be launched next month by mohammad ben hussein amman — a twice-weekly jordanian-syrian express rail service will be launched between damascus and amman next month, an official said monday. the new service will be inaugurated on july 16 using the tracks of the old hijaz railway, the official from the jordan hijaz railway told the jordan times. officials here hailed the news as a further step in improving relations between jordan and syria. the rail service topic came during a visit by officials from the jordan hijaz railway corporation to syria. “i hope that this [understanding] will strengthen the ties with syria,” said minister of transport jamal saraireh. “this is the first positive sign after the recent visit of the syrian minister of transport, [mufid abdul karim], who came to jordan with positive ideas and a high spirit,” saraireh told the jordan times on monday. jordan and syria decided earlier this month to create a joint committee to study the prospects of modernising the present overland transport system, concerning the transport of the syrian-bound goods coming from east and south east asia via the port of aqaba, and jordanian-bound goods coming from northern europe and the black sea via syrian ports. during a visit to syria, officials discussed possible ways of facilitating the railway traffic between the two countries which used to suffer from much delay on the syrian borders, said usama khureisheh, assistant general manager of the hijaz railway corporation. the railway's jordanian and syrian directors also discussed a syrian study on the feasibility of a new railway line to replace the existing one which dates back to the turn of the century, said the official. they also agreed to “improve and develop freight links to give businessmen and companies the facilities to boost the volume of trade” between jordan and syria, he said. syrian-jordanian relations, which became tense in 1994 when jordan signed a peace treaty with israel, began improving in february when president hafez assad attended the funeral of king hussein. his majesty king abdullah made a landmark visit to syria in april, and last month syria promised to provide its drought-ridden neighbour with eight million cubic metres of water to cover its needs this summer. back to june 15th, 1999
